| Ancestor | a family member from the past who early Chinese people honored and respected. |
| Bureaucracy | a system of government in China where trained officials helped run the empire |
| Censor | a government action in early China where leaders controlled or limited what scholars were allowed to say or teach. |
| Mandate of Heaven | the Chinese idea that a ruler had permission from heaven to rule as long as he was fair. |
| Warring State | one of the rival kingdoms that fought for control of China. |
| Oracle Bone | a piece of bone or shell used in early China to predict the future. |
| Cultural Diffusion | the spread of ideas goods and traditions between different Chinese regions and other lands. |
| Export | a product such as silk that China sent to other places to trade. |
| Caravan | a group of traders who traveled together across Asia to trade Chinese goods. |
