| varna | The major classes of South Asian society. People were usually considered members into which they were born. |
| Brahman | It is the one universal spirit. Every living thing has a soul that is part of Brahman. |
| reincarnation | Is the rebirth of the soul after a person dies. It is a central belief of Hinduism. |
| Buddha | “Awakened One.” taught that enlightenment and freedom from suffering are possible through meditation and right living. |
| Ashoka | Chandragupta Maurya’s grandson. He expanded the Mauryan Empire to include all of northern and central India. After years of waging war, He adopted Buddhism and became known as a just and caring leader. He helped Buddhism spread in Asia. |
| Vedas | The Aryans’ prayers, hymns, stories, and poems are collectively called the Vedas |
| Sanskrit | The ancient language of the Aryans and the first written language of India. |
| Silk Road | A network of overland trade routes that connected China in the east to Rome in the west. Merchants in South Asia traded along these routes. |
| subcontinent | A large landmass that is smaller than a continent. India is a triangle-shaped that makes up much of South Asia. |
| monsoons | Seasonal winds. The cold, dry winter = winds blow east to west. The summer = warm air and heavy rains, west to east |
