SOL VS.1 -- Physical Geography Definitions/Characteristics

Coastal Plain (Tidewater) Flat land near the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay
Piedmont Rolling hills
Blue Ridge Mountain Old, rounded mountains that are part of the Appalachian mount system
Valley and Ridge Includes the Great Valley of Virginia and other valleys seperated by ridges
Appalachian Plateau Only a small part is in Virginia and located in Southwest Virginia
Piedmont means "land at the foot of the mountains"
Coastal Plain (Tidewater) East of the fall line
Valley and Ridge located West of the Blue Ridge Mountains
Piedmont West of the fall line
Fall Line A natural border between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont where rivers drop and waterfalls prevent further travel
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on three (3) sides
Virginia's Border States Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina
Border an edge or boundary line marking the limits of an area
Relative Location Describes the connection between two (2) places (next to, near, or bordering)
Blue Ridge Mountain source of many rivers
Atlantic Ocean transportation link between Virginia and Europe
Boundary a line marking the limits of an area (natural or artificial)
Plateau a raised, flat piece of land
Dismal Swamp located in Costal Plain Region and surveyed by George Washington
Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay Virginia's two bordering bodies of water
The Eastern Shore peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and Atlantic Ocean to the east
