Reconstruction

Week 1 Vocabulary: VS.8abc

TermDefinition
Reconstruction The period of time that directly followed the end of the Civil War It was a time of change and rebuilding.
amendment A change or addition to the U.S. Constitution. It explains or protects the rights of people.
Thirteenth Amendment 1865: Abolished, or ended, slavery in the United States.
Fourteenth Amendment 1866: Gave citizenship to any person born in the United States. African Americans become citizens for the first time.
Fifteenth Amendment 1870: Gave African American men the right to vote.
infrastructure The roads, bridges, railroads, and buildings a state needs to work.
economy How people make money and trade goods.
sharecropping A system where poor farmer rented land from wealthy landowners. They paid rent with a portion, or a part, of their crops.
The Freedmen's Bureau A government program created to help freed African Americans by: - Providing food, clothing, and medical care - Establishing schools - Helping people find jobs
Freedmen's Schools Schools where African American children and adults learned how to read and write.
