Age of Exploration

Exploration Traveling to new places to discover land, trade routes, and resources.
Age of Exploration A time period (1400s–1600s) when European countries sent ships to explore and map new parts of the world.
Motives (The 3 G’s)The main reasons explorers traveled Gold : To find wealth and valuable goods God : To spread Christianity Glory : To gain fame and power for themselves and their country
Trade Route A path used to move goods from one place to another.
Navigation The skill of planning and controlling the direction of a ship.
Caravel A small, fast sailing ship that made long ocean voyages possible.
Circumnavigate To travel all the way around something, especially around the entire Earth by ship or plane.
Colony A settlement started by people who move from one country to live in a new land.
Conquistador A Spanish soldier or explorer who conquered lands in the Americas.
Missionary A person sent to spread their religion to others.
Empire A large group of lands and people ruled by one leader or country.
Worldview The way people see and understand the world around them.
Christopher Columbus An explorer who sailed for Spain in 1492 and reached islands in the Caribbean.
Hernán Cortés A Spanish conquistador who defeated the Aztec Empire in Mexico.
Francisco Pizarro A Spanish conquistador who defeated the Inca Empire in South America.
Ferdinand Magellan Led the first expedition to sail around the world (circumnavigate the globe).
