Key Reconstruction Vocabulary

| Amendment | a change or addition to the US Constitution |
| Amnesty | The act of forgiving people who broke the law |
| Black Codes | Southern laws that limited the freedom of African Americans after the Civil War. |
| Carpetbagger | A person from the North who went to the South to help the newly freed slaves. They got their name from the large suitcase-like bags made from carpet scraps that many carried filled with their possessions |
| Civil Rights | The basic rights and freedoms guaranteed to all citizens. |
| Compromise of 1877 | The political deal that ended Reconstruction by removing federal troops from the South. |
| Disenfranchisement | The act of taking away someone’s right to vote. |
| Freedmen’s Bureau | a US government agency created during Reconstruction for the purpose of helping freed people find education, homes, jobs, and separated family members |
| Impeachment | The process of charging a government official, like the president, with wrongdoing. |
| Oath of Allegiance | A formal promise to remain loyal to the U.S. and its Constitution. |
| Pocket Veto | When the president ignores a bill and it fails to become law without a formal veto. |
| Ratify | To formally approve something, such as a law or amendment. |
| Reconciliation | The re-establishment of friendly relationships |
| Reconstruction | The years between 1865-1877 when the nation reunited and rebuilt after the Civil War ended. |
| Scalawag | A white Southerner who supported Reconstruction and the Republican Party. |
| Secession | The act of formally leaving or withdrawing from an organization, such as the Union. |
| Segregation | The separation of people based on race, enforced by law or custom. Legally, this was supported by Plessy v. Ferguson and allowed racial separation as long as facilities were supposedly “equal.” |
| Sharecropper | A farmer who pays for using a piece of land with a portion of a crop grown on that land |
| Solid South | A term describing the South’s consistent political support for the Democratic Party after Reconstruction. |
| Supremacy | A belief that a person or group is better than others because of a trait such as skin color, culture, or religion. |
| Veto | The power of the president to reject a law passed by Congress. |
