| humanism | idea that humans and their achievements are of greatest importance (shift away from religion as the most important area of study) |
| printing press | a machine for quickly printing letters or pictures on paper or other material with ink |
| Reformation | religious movement of the 16th century that led to the creation of the Protestant churches |

| Protestants | group of Christians that split away from the Catholic church |
| Counter Reformation | attempts by Catholic Church to stop Protestant Reformation and later attempts to fix problems within the Catholic Church |

| indulgences | Church officials would tell people if they paid money they could be forgiven for sins |
