Why are the North China Plains called "The Land of the Yellow Earth"? It is called the Land of the Yellow Earth because of the loess from the Gobi Desert.
Why is the Huang He River yellow? It is yellow because of a limestone called loess.
What are the challenges from the Huang He River? The Huang He River has flooded more than 1,500 times, which caused destruction.
What was one benefit of living in the Chang Jiang River Valley? The Chang Jiang River Valley flooded less and had a good condition for growing crops.
What is one challenge of living in the Chang Jiang River Valley? It was not suitable for grazing animals.
How did they create fertile land in the Chang Jiang River Valley? They built terraces along the sides of the mountain and hills.
Why is the Tibetan Plateau called " The Roof of the World"? It rises 2 miles above sea level, which makes the climate cold.
Why is there no fertile land in the Tibetan Plateau? Since it rises 2 miles above sea level, the conditions there are too cold and dry.
What is the tallest mountain peak in the Himalayas? The tallest mountain peak in the Himalayas is Mt. Everest.
What is one benefit of the Himalayas? It gave natural protection that separated the Indain subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
What does Taklamakan mean? "Once you go in, you will not come out."
How did the Taklamakan get its name? For how dangerous it is from its sudden sandstorms.
How is the Gobi Desert different from the Taklamakan? The Gobi Desert is made up of small pebbles called loess, whereas the Taklamakan Desert has huge sand dunes.
How is the Gobi Desert connected to the Huang He/North China Plains? The Gobi Desert is connected to the Huang He River and the North China Plains because of the loess.
What is the Mandate of Heaven? The right to rule given by the gods.
According to the Mandate of Heaven, what did the Chinese owe to their leader? They owed loyalty and obedience.
How do we know the Shang dynasty existed and was more than a myth? Archeologists discovered the ruins of Anyang in the Huang He River Valley.
How does bronze relate to the Shang Dynasty? Bronze was one reason the dynasty was able to remain in power for over 500 years.
What was the purpose of oracle bones? The oracle bones were used for making important decisions or advice.
What lead to the downfall of the Shang dynasty? List three reasons. - Fighting so many wars weakened the dynasty and military. -Kings spent too much money on palaces, clothing, and tombs. -Kings spent too much time hunting rather than ruling the dynasty.
Define feudalism. A give and take relationship between the social classes that created law and order.
What did the Nobles provide to the King? Loyalty and military service.
What did the King provide to the Nobles? States.
What did the Nobles provide for the Peasants? Protection.

Why was feudalism created during the Zhou dynasty? To increase stability.

Why did the Chinese develop Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism? So that there are different ways to govern and each one had a major influence on the Chinese culture.

Describe the basic idea of Legalism and how rulers should rule under this philosophy. - Harsh and strict laws - Rulers should enforce laws with rewards for good behavior and harsh punishments for bad behavior.
Which philosophy did the leader of the Qin dynasty (Shi Huang Di) follow? Why? Legalism because Emperor Shi Huang Di didn't want his people to take control.
What did Emperor Qin standardize and why was it important? So that trades were fair and equal.
Why did they build the Great Wall of China? So that the empire would be protected from northern invaders.

Why did Emperor Qin’s order the execution of 460 Confucian scholars and the burning of the books? Emperor Qin executed 460 Confucian scholars and burned those books because he didn't want the people to adapt to that way of life.
What is the purpose of the chain pump? It was used to transport the water from the rivers.
What is the purpose of the seismograph? It was used to detect earthquakes.
What is the purpose of the kite? To send messages and scare off enemies.
Why is silk so valuable? Silk is so valuable because only the Chinese knew how to produce it>
