What are the 2 main causes of the Civil War? States rights for the south and emancipation of the slaves for the north.
Who was the president of the Union during the war? Abraham Lincoln
Who was Jefferson Davis? President of the Confederacy.
Who was General Robert E. Lee? The general who led the Confederacy.
Who was General Ulysses S. Grant? The leader of the Union army.
Who was John Wilkes Booth? The man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln
What was the Emancipation Proclamation? An order by Abraham Lincoln that stated all enslaved people in the south were now free.
Why did Abraham Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation? The Union was losing the war and they would gain new fighters when the enslaved were freed.
What role did formerly enslaved people play in the war? They fought for the Union and helped them win.
Which battle was the turning point of the Civil War? Gettysburg
Why was Gettysburg a turning point in the Civil War? The confederacy lost more than a third of their fighters.
What was Lincoln's 10% plan? Pardoned most southerners, required only 10% of voters to swear allegiance to the U.S. and agree to emancipation
What does Juneteenth celebrate? The day Union Army General Granger took control of Galveston, TX and announced that "all slaves are free."
During reconstruction, what was the goal of the republicans? To create a more equal society with more opprtunities and rights for black Americans.
During reconstruction, what was the goal of the democrats? To regain political power and enforce white supremacy by suppressing the rights of black Americans.
What postive outcomes did Reconstruction have on black Americans? They won the right to vote and hundreds of black politicians were elected into office.
What negative outcomes did Reconstruction have on black Americans? Laws were passed to limit the freedoms of black Americans. Hate groups like the Ku KLux Klan terrorized and killed black Americans to keep them from voting.
What did the 13th Amendment do? Made slavery illegal
What did the 15th Amendment do? Gave black men the right to vote
