What is a monopoly? complete control over an industries production, wages, and prices. This means that consumers had fewer choices in the marketplace
What are trusts? competing companies put control of their businesses under a single group of trustees.competing companies put control of their businesses under a single group of trustees.
What was Social Darwinism? the misapplication of Darwinism's “survival of the fittest” to human society, arguing that the wealthy and powerful succeed naturally
What was Bimetallism? a monetary system in which the government would give citizens either gold or silver in exchange for paper currency or checks.
What were the Jim Crow Laws? laws enacted by southern state and local governments to separate white and black people in public and private facilities.
What was the Sherman Antitrust Act? an act that made it illegal to form a trust that interfered with free trade between states or with other countries.
What was a Robber Baron? wealthy industrialists who used unfair business practices. They exploited workers, or crushed competition, to gain wealth.
What is the Granger Movement? an alliance with U.S. farmers in the mid west
What is the Populist Party? a group of farmers and workers; they believed that the federal government should regulate railroads and banks.
Who was John D. Rockefeller? created monopolies and used harsh labor practices and both donated a lot of money and built industry; created his oil business- Buying out all of his competitors, horizontal integration, monopolies, trusts.
Who was Andrew Carnegie? created monopolies and used harsh labor practices and both donated a lot of money and built industry; invented steel- Vertical integration (in control of all factors of production).
Who was J.P. Morgan? a financier and banker who financed railroads during the Gilded Age, trying to shape the economy.
Who were Cowboys? were not in great demand. His way of life stemmed directly from that of those first Spanish ranchers in Mexico. His food, clothes, and vocabulary were heavily influenced by the Mexican vaquero.
What was the Dawes Act? law that broke up Native American reservation
What was the Homestead Act? act that offered free land to western settlers.
What was the Bessemer Process? A method for mass producing steel by removing impurities from molten iron.
What were some Hardships faced by frontier farmers? heat, tornados, droughts, Natives attacking, farmers with debt due to expensive farming equipment, low crop prices, locust (flying grasshoppers), isolation, poor soil, and poor farming techniques.
