| Election of 2000 | This election ended up being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court following a problem with the counting of ballots in Florida. President George W. Bush ended up winning the electoral vote over Al Gore. |
| Al Gore | He was Vice President for Clinton and lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush in one of the closest elections in history. |
| USA PATRIOT Act (Patriot Act) | In response to 9/11, this act to provide law enforcement agencies more resources to combat foreign and domestic terrorism by allowing them to search private records. Many believe it to be unconstitutional and an extreme response to the attacks. |
| War on Terror | After the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the U.S. began this campaign to fight terrorism. This war led to the deaths of Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. |
| Hurricane Katrina | This hurricane led to the evacuation of 80% of New Orleans. It holds the record for the highest storm surge and costliest hurricane. |
| American Recovery & Reinvestment Act | This 2009 Act increased the role of the federal government by increasing government spending to jump start the economy. |

| September 11th terrorist attacks, 2001 | Coordinated terrorist attack carried out by al-Qaeda using commercial airliners flown into buildings. Led directly to 2002 invasion of Afghanistan (then the base of al-Qaeda operations) and the longest war in US history. |
| Operation Enduring Freedom | President George W. Bush; the United States and its allies invaded the country of Afghanistan in order to remove the Taliban from power after they supported the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks. |
| Operation Iraqi Freedom | President George W. Bush; the US invaded the county of Iraq in 2003, to remove Saddam from power because of the fear that he was developing or had weapons of mass destruction |
