Progressive Ear

TermDefinition
PROGRESSIVISM A reform movement in the late 1800s and early 1900s that aimed to fix problems caused by industrialization, such as corruption, unsafe working conditions, and unfair business practices.
Theodore Roosevelt The 26th president of the United States who supported Progressive reforms, believed the government should regulate big businesses, and worked to protect natural resources.
TRUST A large business or group of companies that joined together to control an industry, limit competition, and raise prices unfairly.
MUCKRAKER A journalist who exposed corruption, unsafe conditions, or unfair practices in businesses and government in order to bring about reform.
DIRECT PRIMARY An election in which voters choose their party’s candidate for an upcoming election, instead of party leaders making the decision.
PATRONAGE A system in which political leaders give government jobs to friends or supporters instead of choosing people based on skill or qualifications.
CONSERVATION The protection and careful use of natural resources like forests, water, and wildlife so they are not used up or destroyed.
SHERMAN ANTITRUST ACT A law passed in 1890 that made it illegal for businesses to form trusts or monopolies that limited competition and hurt consumers.
CIVIL RIGHTS The rights of citizens to be treated equally under the law, including freedom from discrimination based on race, gender, or other characteristics.
