Black Death

| Black Death / Plague | A deadly disease that spread across Europe in the 1300s and killed millions of people. |
| Plague | Another name for the Black Death; a serious illness caused by bacteria. |
| Bacteria | Tiny living germs that can cause disease and make people very sick. |
| Symptoms | Signs that show someone is sick, such as fever, chills, vomiting, or pain. |
| Boils | Painful, swollen sores on the skin that can fill with blood and pus. |
| Airborne | Able to spread through the air from one person to another. |
| Fleas | Small insects that bite animals and people and helped spread the plague. |
| Rats | Rodents that carried infected fleas and helped the plague spread. |
| Medieval | Related to the Middle Ages, the time period in Europe from about 500–1500. |
| Bloodletting | A medical practice where doctors removed blood, believing it would cure illness. |
| Flagellants | Religious people who whipped themselves to show sorrow and ask God for forgiveness. |
| Penance | Punishment people gave themselves to show regret for their sins. |
| Zealot | A person who is extremely devoted to a religious or political belief. |
| Isolation | Keeping people apart from others to prevent the spread of disease. |
| Antibiotics | Medicines used today to treat diseases caused by bacteria. |
