Civilization A complex society with cities, organized government, art, religion, class divisions, and a writing system
City-state An independent state made up of a city and surrounding land and villages
Empire A group of territories or nations under a single ruler or government
Province A political district
Ziggurat A temple-home to the gods of Mesopotamia and the treasury
Canal A man-made waterway
Irrigation A method of bringing water to a field to water crops
Caravan A group of traveling merchants and animals
Cuneiform The Sumerian system of writing made up of wedge-shaped markings
Scribe A professional record-keeper
Artisan A skilled craftsperson
Astronomer A person who studies the heavenly bodies, and maps of the stars, planets, and phases of the moon
Deity God or Goddess (the plural form is deities)
