| Maritime Trade | Trading goods over seas. |
| Polis | A political unit that included the city & the surrounding area and acted as an independent country. |
| Civic participation | A citizen’s right & responsibility to take part in government. |
| Oligarchy | A type of government in which a small group of people have control. Sparta used this government type. |
| Peloponnesian Wars | Wars between Sparta & Athens which weakened Greece resulting in being overtaken by Macedonians. |
| Helot | The name of Greek slaves, who were usually prisoners of war. |
| Hoplite | The name of a Greek soldier. |
| Socrates | Greek philosopher who used questioning to teach his students. Would be called the Socratic Method. |
| Plato | Greek philosopher who was a student of Socrates and wrote a book called The Republic. Also started a school called The Academy |
| Aristotle | Greek philosopher who was the tutor of Alexander the Great. Started a school called the Lyceum. |
| Acropolis | The hilltop in the center of each polis. Forts & temples such as the Parthenon were built on the this. |
| Hellenistic Culture | Greek-Like culture that was spread throughout the world by Alexander the Great. |
| Colonies | A group of people who move to a new territory for resources but remain under the control of their native land. |
| Direct Democracy | A type of government in which all citizens participate firsthand in decision-making directly. Athens used this type of government. |
| Persian Wars | Wars fought between the Greeks & Persians. Included famous battles such as the Battle of Marathon, Battle of Thermopylae, Battle of Salamis. |
| Macedonia | Kingdom north of Greece that conquers the Greeks. |
| The Iliad and the Odyssey | Two Greek epics written by Homer that provide insights into the life of the ancient Greeks. |
| Parthenon | Temple dedicated to Athena and built on the Acropolis of Athens. Shows Greek architecture with many columns. |
| Alexander the Great | Macedonian who conquered the Greeks & spread Greek-like culture to other lands. Built the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. |
| Phalanx | Formation of Greek troops (hoplites) standing shoulder to shoulder, shield to shield. |
