Civics & Government Foundations Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Rule of Law Principle that everyone, including leaders, must follow the law.
Civil Trial A court case involving disputes over money or property.
Equal Protection Laws must apply equally to all people.
Suffrage The right to vote in elections.
Loyalist Colonist who supported Britain during the American Revolution.
Patriot Colonist who supported independence from Britain.
Natural Rights Basic rights including life, liberty, and property.
Self‑Government People create and follow their own laws.
Civic Duty Actions required by law, such as paying taxes or jury duty.
Civic Responsibility Voluntary actions that support the community.
Political Participation Ways citizens take part in government decisions.
Civic Virtue Acting responsibly and for the good of the community.
2nd Amendment Protects the right to own and carry weapons.
7th Amendment Guarantees a civil trial by jury in disputes involving money or property.
14th Amendment Ensures equal protection under the law and fair procedures.
