What does the word conquistador mean? A conquistador is a Spanish soldier explorer
Who was Hernando Cortes? A spanish conquistador who conquered the Aztec leader Montezuma and claimed Mexico for Spain
Who was Montezuma? The hated Aztec leader
What is a plantation? A large farm worked by people who lived on the property
What is a encomienda? (ehn KOH mee ehn dahz) land grants that included the right to demand labor or taxes from Native Americans
Who was Bartolome de Las Casa? A Spanish priest who worked to reform the spanish encomienda system and treatment of the Indians who worked in the mines.
What was a mission? A mission was a religious settlement run by catholic priests and friars.
What was a peninsular? Men who were at the top of the strict spanish colony social system Spanish colonists who had been born in Spain
