Sussex Pledge German promise to warn merchant and passenger ships before they are sunk. Americans hoped this would protect lives and keep the US out of the war.
“unrestricted submarine warfare” German U-boats (submarines) would attack ANY ship that entered or left British ports- even ships of neutral countries like the US. - Ends the Sussex Pledge
Zimmermann Note Secret proposal from Germany to Mexico to make an alliance. If Mexico agreed to be an ally of Germany, Mexico would get land back from the USA.- This alliance never happens.
1917 Communist Revolution in Russia Russia signs a peace treaty with Germany and leaves the war. This allows the Germans to only fight on the western front.
