Mesopotamia

Assyrian A person or thing from Assyria, an ancient civilization that lived thousands of years ago in the area of Mesopotamia
Babylonia An ancient civilization that existed a long time ago in Mesopotamia.
Dried mud brick A brick made from mud and straw that is shaped and left to dry in the sun. It was used in ancient times to build houses and walls.
cuneiform One of the first writing systems in history. It used small wedge-shaped marks pressed into wet clay to write words and numbers.
Euphrates A long river in the Middle East that was very important for ancient civilizations because it provided water for farming and cities.
Fertile Land that is good for growing plants and crops because the soil is rich and healthy.
Hammurabi's code A set of laws written long ago by King Hammurabi of Babylon. It is one of the oldest law codes and helped keep order and justice in society.
Gilgamesh A hero and king from ancient Mesopotamia. He is the main character in the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest stories in the world, where he goes on adventures and searches for immortality.
Irrigate To water crops or land on purpose, usually using canals, pipes, or ditches, so plants can grow better.
Jobs The work people do to earn money or help others. Jobs can be anything from teaching, farming, or building, to caring for people or animals.
Land between rivers Another name for Mesopotamia, the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It was fertile and good for farming, so many ancient civilizations lived there.
Kings Men who rule a country or kingdom. They make important decisions, lead their people, and sometimes fight in wars.
Mesopotamia An ancient region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (in today’s Iraq and parts of Syria, Turkey, and Iran).
Nomads People who move from place to place instead of living in one home. They usually follow animals or search for food.
Oasis A green area in a desert where there is water, plants, and sometimes animals. It is a place where people can rest and grow crops.
Polytheism The belief in many gods instead of just one.
Iraq A country in the Middle East where the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia lived. It is located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Scribe A person who writes and keeps records.
Tigris A long river in the Middle East that helped ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia grow crops and build cities.
United cities Cities that are joined together under one government or ruler to work as a single group for protection, trade, or organization.
Very dry Land or weather that has almost no water or rain, like a desert.
Wheel A round object that turns and is used to move things more easily, like carts, vehicles, or machines.
Excavation The process of digging carefully to find ancient objects, buildings, or fossils buried underground.
Ziggurat A large, stepped temple built in ancient Mesopotamia. People used it to worship their gods and sometimes as a place for important ceremonies.
