5th Geographic Tools

TermDefinition
map legend a tool that explains what each color, shape, or symbol used on a map means: another term for a map key
cardinal directions the four primary directions; north, south, east, and west
map scale a tool that shows how distances on a map compare to actual distances on Earth
compass rose a map tool that indicates the orientation of north and other cardinal or intermediate directions on a map
map a flat, two-dimensional representation of the earth or some area of land or sea (be able to identify a picture of a map)
coordinates a pair of numbers and/or letters that use a grid to identify a specific location
intermediate directions the directions halfway between the four cardinal directions; northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast
map title the heading that tells what information is shown on the the map
globe a three-dimensional model of Earth
relative location the location of a place in relation to other places
grid a series of horizontal and vertical lines that cross each other to divide an area into sections (be able to identify a picture of a grid)
