| Karma | the belief that actions affect what happens in this life or the next |
| Dharma | a person’s duty or rules for living a good life in India |
| Vedas | ancient sacred texts written by early Indian people |
| Reincarnation | the belief that a soul is born again in a new life |
| Sanskrit | an ancient language used to write early Indian texts |
| Pilgrimage | a journey to a holy place in India |
| Nirvana | a peaceful state free from suffering in Buddhism |
| Eightfold Path | Buddhist steps that guide people to live wisely and kindly |
| Four Noble Truths | basic Buddhist teachings about suffering and how to end it |
| Enlightenment | gaining deep understanding and wisdom in Buddhism |
| Edict | an official law or order given by a ruler in India |
| Excavate | to dig up land to find ancient objects |
| Citadel | a strong center of a city used for protection |
| Fortress | a strong building made to defend people |
| Annual | something that happens once every year |
| Produced | made or grown |
| Infer | to figure something out using clues |
| Deposited | laid down |
| Enriches | makes land better for farming |
| Prevented | stopped something from happening |
| Demonstrates | shows or proves something clearly |
| Excavated | dug up by archaeologists to find the past |
| Meditating | sitting quietly to focus the mind in Hinduism or Buddhism |

| Interpret laws | explain what laws mean and how they should be followed |
