| anti - imperialism | is the belief in opposing domination, control, or exploitation of one nation by another, supporting sovereignty and self-determination instead |
| Big Stick Diplomacy | A US policy that stated the US would not only build a large military but would also use it if necessary |
| Dollar Diplomacy | US business development would bring Latin America out of poverty |
| Imperialism | Is the political domination of a strong nation over a weaker one - |
| Isolationism | policy avoiding involvement in foreign affairs |
| John Hay | This US Sectary of State helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris and wrote the Open Door Notes. Historians remember him as a strong imperialist. |
| Monroe Doctrine | The US warned European powers to stay out of Latin American affairs |
| New Manifest Destiny | Stated the US would expand into the Pacific Basin |
| Protectorate | Foreign affairs were largely controlled by the US (another country) |
| Social Darwinism | "survival of the fittest" + stronger people in businesses would win out in society (the weaker one would fail) |
| Tariff | Is a tax a government places on imported or exported goods, mainly to raise revenue or protect domestic industries. |
| Yellow Journalism | is when authors exaggerate stories or make them up to attract readers. |
| Draft | is the compulsory enlistment of people into military service, also called conscription. |
| Reparations | Monetary compensation for damage caused by the war |
| Selective Service Act | A law requiring men to register for military draft during WWI. |
| Liberty Bonds | Government-issued bonds sold to raise money for the war effort. |
| Militarism | governments built militaries + were eager to use them. |
| Alliances | countries promoted to defend one another - brought WW nations into the war. |
| Imperialism (WWI) | created completion and rivalry |
| Nationalism | pride + devotion to one's nation |
| Neutral | means not taking sides in a conflict or war |
| Propaganda | information designed to influence opinion |
