What was the starting point of the war? The shot heard around the world.
Who's Thomas Gage? A British general that wanted to capture the weapons stored in Concord.
When (date) did the war for independence begin? April 19, 1775.
When did the war (actions) begin? When about 70 minutemen engaged British troops on Lexington Green and fired the shot heard round the world.
What happened when the British pressed on to Concord after their victory at Lexington? They were beaten back by colonists and forced into retreat.
What's a siege? A situation in which soldiers surrounded a city or fort.
What did Common Sense by Thomas Paine argue? It argued in clear and forceful language that the time had come for the colonists to declare their independence.
Who's Thomas Paine? He briefly served in the Continental Army but his greatest service was as a propagandist. (Reached a wide audience b/c his message and style).
Who created a committee to write a document declaring independence? The Second Continental Congress.
What are three points in the Declaration of Independence? All men possess unalienable rights(life and liberty) King George III violated those rights The colonies had a right to break away
Who's General Burgoyne? Began with a stunning British victory at Ticonderoga before surrendering his army of 6,000 men to the American troops at Saratoga, NY.
Who's Benedict Arnold? Known as the hero of Saratoga. He led a bold charge that forced the British retreat before being wounded.
What's the Battle of Saratoga? In autumn of 1777 American forces met, defeated and forced a major British army to surrender.
What did the victory at Saratoga do? It renewed Patriots hopes for independence, secured foreign support and forever changed the face of the world.
What did Cornwallis do? Signed orders surrendering the British army to combined French and American force outside the Virginia tobacco part of Yorktown.
What did Rochambeau do? Provided valuable expertise in the conducting of the siege at Yorktown.
