TermDefinition
Nerve A whitish fiber or bundle of fibers that transmits impulses of sensation to sensation to the brain or spinal cord, and impulses from these to the muscles and organs.
Ligand-gated ion channels Transmembrane proteins that open to allow ions to pass through the cell membrane when a specific chemical messenger, or ligand, binds to them.
CNS Central Nervous System is made up the brain and spinal cord, and is responsible for processing all sensory information and coordinating body functions.
PNS The Peripheral Nervous System is the network of nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord that connects the central nervous system (CNS) to the rest of the body, including limbs and organs.
ANS Autonomic Nervous System controls involuntary body functions like breathing and heart rate.
Two circulations in the body Pulmonary and systemic circulation.
Lymphatic and Immune Systems Organ system in vertebrates that is part of the immune system and complimentary to the circulatory system.
Respiratory and Gas exchange Respiratory and Gas exchange system, responsible for bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide, vital for the whole body.
Digestion Digestion of food is a form of catabolism, in which the food is broken down into small molecules that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair.
Absorbtion Absorption is the process where one substance takes in and incorporates another, occurring at a molecular level where molecules or energy penetrate and distribute throughout the bulk of a material.
