Chapter 6.3 Domestic Controversies

"Tariff of Abominations" Southern name for the Tariff of 1828 which raised tariff rates
Tariff of 1832 Tariff that lowered the tariff rates from the Tariff of 1828 but was still nullified by SC
Ordinance of Nullification Resolution passed by the SC legislative nullifying the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 and threatening secession if the federal government attempted to enforce the tariff
Compromise Tariff of 1833 Compromise that lowered the rates from the Tariff of 1832 and resulted in SC withdrawing in nullification of the Tariff of 1832 and accepting the compromise tariff, temporarily ending the threat of civil war
Nicholas Biddle President of the Second Bank
Force Bill Bill passed by Congress in response to the Nullification Crisis and allowing the president to use the military to enforce federal tariffs
"pet banks" State banks in which federal revenues were deposited in Andre Jackson's efforts to destroy the Second Bank of the US
Specie Circular Executive order by Andre Jackson that all public land sales be done in specie (gold and silver) rather than paper money
