Fugitive Slave Act 1850s, Everyone was required to help catch slaves under threat of a fine or imprisonment
Dred-Scott Decision Dred Scott was a slave was taken to Illinois for 3 years and then back to Missouri. Sues for his freedom and wins. Fugitive Slave Act passes and he’s taken back into slavery. Ruled that Congress can’t ban slavery and African Americans aren’t citizens
Shadrach Minkins 1850s, Escaped slavery to Boston and was arrested, marshals try to re-enslave him. Abolitionist attorneys try to free him legally, fail, kidnap him out of danger
Vigilance Committees 1850s, Gave supplies to escaped slaves heading to Canada. Raised legal fees for former slaves and protected free African Americans from being re-enslaved
Prigg vs. Pennsylvania State and local officials in the North don’t have to enforce Fugitive Slave Act if they don’t want to
Kansas-Nebraska Act 1850s, Goal is to balance the senate. Cali becomes a free state, Utah and New Mexico vote on whether they’ll be free or slave states, abolition of slave trade in DC, tougher fugitive slave law

Atchison's Ruffians 1855, Atchison and his men go to Kansas to vote to establish it as a slave state. Physically took over polling stations and declared themselves winners. Congress denied them, lost the re-vote
Emigrant Aid Society Encouraged people from Northern states to move to Kansas and vote against slavery
Bleeding Kansas 1850/60s, Population of Kansas is allowed to vote on whether it’ll be a free or slave state. Whig party is killed off and Republican party forms. Ruffians take over and win first election but lose second election
John Brown's Raid 1850s, Abolitionist attack on the US federal armory at Harpers Ferry, VA. Meant to cause a slave uprising. Southerners viewed as a Northern conspiracy against slavery, Northerners viewed Brown as a martyr
Slave Code 1860, Election of 1860, Democratic convention. People want Steven Douglas to adopt slave code. He doesn’t, losing him votes. Causes 2 competing Democratic conventions.
Emancipation Proclamation 1860s, Lincoln issues a decree stating that any slave states who return to the union can keep their slaves. None of them do that
Richmond Bread Riot 1860s, Confederate food shortage, angry women and families loot stores in Richmond
Harriet Tubman 1860s, Union spy. Formerly lead 300 slaves to freedom in underground railroad. Organized a network of African American spies in NC
Beefsteak Raid 1860s, Confederate operation that stole 2,500 cattle from behind enemy lines
Cotton Diplomacy 1860s, Confederacy wants Britain in their pocket so they stop selling cotton to starve them. Other colonies ramp up cotton production and Confederacy never actually stopped selling cotton
Bishop Francis Asbury Methodist leader who preached that slavery was unchristian and undemocratic. Those who don't get rid of their slaves are kicked out
