| Embargo Act of 1807 | supposed to stop all foreign imports from arriving in American harbors |
| Embargo | a law that restricts commerce (trading) with one or more nations |
| Customs | taxes placed on imported and exported goods |
| Tecumseh | Shawnee chief who spoke out against destruction of native cultures and economies, criticized Native American leaders who sold their land to the US |
| Prophetstown | community devoted to Native American unity and opposition to US expansion |
| Prophet | someone who is believed to deliver messages that come from God or some other divine source |
| Battle of Tippecanoe | attack led by governor of Indiana, burned Prophetstown to the ground to try to stop Tecumseh |
| War Hawks | Americans who favored war, tried to call the US to arms after the Battle of Tippecanoe |
| War of 1812 | war with Britain in response to tensions with Native Americans & Britain |
| Francis Scott Key | wrote the Star Spangled Banner (became the national anthem of the United States) |
