Fertile Crescent A region of the Middle East that stretches in a large crescent shaped curve from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. It includes Mesopotamia.

ziggurat a temple that looked like a pyramid shaped brick tower. It rose up in steps. Some were 7 stories tall.
cuneiform a system of writing that used tringular shaped symbols to stand for ideas or things.
bronze a harder metal than copper: made by mixing copper and tin. Used for weapon making.
empire state containing several countries or territories
Hammurabi's Code a set of laws that governed life in the Babylonian Empire; almost 300 written laws
Rule of law (think FOLLOW THE RULES!) idea that all members of society, even the rich, must obey the law.

Phoenician Alphabet This alphabet had 22 symbols. Each stood for a consonant sound The alphabet made writing much easier to learn, so more people could learn to write.
poly This prefix means MANY. When you see it at the start of a word know it means MANY.
mono This prefix means ONE. when you see it at the start of the word it mean ONE.
irrigation noun- applicaation of water to land to assist in watering crops
