| Asepsis | absence of microorganisms obtained through aseptic procedures which help eliminate pathogens |
| Common-Source Outbreak | individuals are infected from the same source at the same time, such as contaminated food at a restaurant |
| Epidemic | sudden outbreak of a disease affecting a particular region, community or population |
| Epidemiologist | individual who studies an area of epidemiology |
| Epidemiology | study of the distribution and determinants of diseases or disorders |
| Immunization | preventative medical intervention given to protect individuals from a disease |
| Isolation | practice of separating individuals who have contagious diseases from the rest of the population |
| Mixed Outbreak | outbreak including both common-source and propagated characteristics |
| Outbreak | infectious diseases which spread rapidly across populations |
| Pandemic | infectious diseases which spread across multiple populations or geographic areas |
| Propagated Outbreak | diseases passed between individuals through direct contact, vehicle-borne transmission or vector-borne transmission |
| Public Health | science of preventing epidemics and pandemics and improving the health of populations |
| Quarantine | practice of separating individuals or reducing the movement of individuals who may have been infected with a contagious disease |
| Vaccine Resistance | populations with hesitance toward receiving vaccinations |
| Vulnerable Population | individuals who are more susceptible to contracting illnesses based on personal characteristics or living situations |
| World Health Organization (WHO) | responsible for notifying the public of disease cases and providing pandemic preparedness plans |
