Mandate of Heaven A political theory developed during the Zhou Dynasty of ancient China in which those in power were believed to have the right to rule from divine authority.
Confucianism A philosophy of ethics, education, and public service based on the writings of Confucius and traditionally thought of as one of the core elements of Chinese culture.
Silk Road An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea as far as Rome.
Himalaya Mountains a mountain range extending 1500 miles on the border between India and China
Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE) Unified China after the Period of the Warring States and used Legalism as its base of belief.
filial piety (kinship) In Confucian thought, a love and respect for one's parents and ancestors.
The Analects Collection of moral and social teachings of Confucius, including the concept of the Five Relationships(kinship).
Philosophy A system of beliefs and values (Confucianism, Legalism, Daoism)
Yangtze River Longest major river in China; south of the Yellow River
Yellow River Also known as the Huang he; first civilizations in China developed along the this river.
Confucius A Chinese philosopher who developed a code of behavior based on old traditions, moral/good behavior, and kinship. He wanted to restore social order. Five constant relationships.
This helped Chinese kings rule over a large territory such as China. Mandate of Heaven
Gobi Desert A desert north of China in Mongolia.
Legalism A philosophy that rejected Confucianism. Emphasized the importance of strict laws and harsh punishments because all people are evil by nature and they required a strong, forceful government. The Qin dynasty used this.
Confucianism led to political success and longevity of the Han Dynasty
Porcelain Fine glass or ceramic made in China and traded along the Silk Road.
Magnetic Compass A Chinese achievement that used the Earth's magnetic field to show the direction north was. Made navigation easier.
Woodblock Printing A Chinese achievement that used carved wooden blocks to replicate written messages on paper over and over again.
Shi Huangdi Chinese emperor who started the Qin Dynasty.
Han Dynasty China's Golden Age where there was peace and prosperity throughout China.
Longevity lasting a long time.
Unification Bringing together as one.
Dynasty Family of rulers in China.
Hierarchy The organizing of people in order of importance.
The Analects A book that has all of the teachings of Confucius.
Pacific Ocean Largest Body of water in the world. Located east of China.
