26th Amendment: initiated by Vietnam War in 1971; 18 year old people can enlist/drafted therefore they can vote
14th Amendment: provides equal protection under the law; desegregate schools
Purpose of grand jury: to decide whether there is enough evidence for an indictment (formal charge
Civil Rights Act of 1964: signed by LBJ prohibits discrimination in public facilities
19th Amendment: women's suffrage (women's right to vote)
Jim Crow laws: require segregation of blacks and whites
13th Amendment: abolish slavery
25th Amendment: presidential succession (who becomes president if he is unable to lead)
Civil liberties: the rights of a person to do, think, and say what they want if this does not harm other people
Indictment: formal charge or accusation of a serious crime
censorship: is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information. This may be done on the basis that such material is considered obscene
bail: release or secure the release of (a prisoner) on payment of a sum of money decided by a judge
eminent domain: the process by which the government may seize private property with proper compensation, but without the owner's consent
search warrant: a court order issued by a judge which authorizes police officers to search a person's home or property
double jeopardy: the prosecution of a person twice (double) for the same offense
suffrage: right to vote
libel: written lies about someone
slander: spoken lies about someone (slander and spoken both start with "s")
