Ancient Egypt Vocab

These are words that will be on your Egypt district test.

TermDefinition
Cataract A strong set of river rapids in the Nile that made travel difficult.
pharaoh The king of ancient Egypt who ruled like a god on Earth.
hieroglyph Writing that uses pictures and symbols. Used in Egyptian writing.
afterlife The life Egyptians believed happened after death.
mummification The process of preserving a body for the afterlife.
pyramid A large stone tomb built for pharaohs.
papyrus A plant Egyptians used to make paper.
dynasty A family line of rulers in Egypt. (My grandpa, then my son, then his son, etc)
covenant A sacred promise in early Hebrew history.
torah The holy writings of the Hebrew people.
Ten Commandments Laws given to the Hebrews from their god.
monotheism Belief in one god.
exile Being forced to leave one’s home. The Hebrews were forced to leave Egypt.
sabbath A holy day of rest for the Hebrews.
Synagogue A place where Jewish people worship.
Predictable Happening in a regular pattern. You know it is going to happen.
Impact A strong effect something has on something else. Can be a positive impact or a negative impact.
Region An area with shared features
Isolated Separated from others by deserts or distance.
Fertilized Made soil rich and good for farming.
Quarrying Cutting stone out of rock for building.
Water receded When floodwater went back down.
Crops tended Farmers taking care of growing plants.
Attracted hunters Animals near water brought people who hunted them.
Silt Rich soil left behind by the Nile flood.
Pyramid A giant stone tomb for a pharaoh.
Receded When water pulled back after flooding.
Irrigation Bringing water to farms using canals.
Harvested Gathering crops when they are ready.
Economy How a place makes money or gets valuables.
Pharaoh The ruler of ancient Egypt.
Concept An idea people think about or understand.
Established a link Created a connection between two things.
Maintained Kept something working or in good condition.
Rosetta Stone A stone that helped people learn to read Egyptian writing.
Hieroglyphics The picture-writing system of ancient Egypt.
Significance Why something is important.
Interpret To explain the meaning of something.
Mummify To preserve a body for the afterlife.
