Salt A valuable resource from Northern Africa used to preserve and flavor food.
Gold A plentiful resource in West Africa that was traded for salt and helped make kingdoms rich.
Middlemen People who connect buyers and sellers. West African kingdoms helped connect African traders.
Arabic A written language brought to West Africa by Muslim merchants.
Sundiata Strong leader who started the Mali Empire and helped expand farming and trade.
Mansa Musa The richest and most famous king of Mali; known for his pilgrimage to Mecca and building up Timbuktu.
Sunni Ali Powerful king of Songhai who brought order, expanded the empire, and was known for never losing a battle.
Timbuktu A major city in Mali known for trade, learning, and religion.
Sahel A region south of the Sahara Desert that was controlled by the Songhai Empire.
