QuestionAnswer
What was the main goal of the southern elite rich after the Civil War? They wanted to quickly restart cotton production so they could stay in power.
Why did some landowners lose their land? They were unable to pay taxes that were raised to pay for schools and other public services.
How did Reconstruction affect the southern elite rich? They gained economic control over the sharecroppers and regained political control at the end of Reconstruction.
What were Scalawags? poor Southern whites who supported reconstruction
What were carpetbaggers? Northerners who moved South, supposedly to take advantage of the misfortune of the South
What happened to cotton farming during the last part of the 19th century? There was worldwide overproduction so prices fell, the soil became depleted of nutrients, and the boll weevil ruined crops
What kind of factories did entrepreneurs begin to build in the South? textile factories
