Colonial Dissent & Protest

King George III King of England during the American Revolution
Parliament the lawmaking body of British government
Patriots Colonists who wanted independence from Britain
Loyalists American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence
Committee of Correspondence & Propaganda system of communications between patriots and colonies. Information designed to influence public opinion
Stamp Act 1765; law that taxed printed goods, including: playing cards, documents, newspapers, etc.
Quartering Act Law that required colonists to feed and shelter British troops
boycott A refusal to buy or use goods and services.
Boston Massacre incident in 1770 in which British troops fired on and killed American colonists
Boston Tea Party protest against increased tea prices in which colonists dumped British tea into Boston harbor
Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts) punished the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. Called the Coercive Acts in England. The Americans called them Intolerable.
Lexington and Concord the first battle of the American Revolution (April 19, 1775)
