| democracy | government by the people |
| presidential democracy | A form of government in which the citizens directly elect a president |
| parliamentary democracy | A democracy in which parliament chooses the government. |
| parliament | A body of representatives that makes laws for a nation |
| legislative branch | the branch of government that makes the laws |
| autocracy | a system of government by one person with absolute power; dictatorship or absolute monarchy |
| democratic republic | A republic in which representatives elected by the people make and enforce laws and policies. |
| presidential government | features a separation of powers between the executive and the legislative branches of the government |
| executive branch | the branch of government that enforces out laws |
| citizen | A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his or her country or community |
| president | Head of the Executive Branch in presidential democracy |
| prime minister | the chief executive in a parliamentary democracy |
| chancellor | title given to the head of government in Germany |
| bicameral | having a legislature divided into an upper and a lower house |
