Westward Expansion

| assimilation | the social process of absorbing one cultural group into harmony with another |
| Dawes Act | 1887 law which gave all Native Am. males 160 acres to farm and also set up schools to make Native Am. children more like other Americans |
| Nez Perce | Native American Tribe that fled capture from U.S. Troops, who almost make it to Canada. |
| Chief Joseph | Leader of the Nez Perce. Fought and fled from the U.S. Army. |
| Indian Reorganization Act | 1934 - Restored tribal ownership of lands, recognized tribal constitutions and government. |
