WWI Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| stalemate | a situation or conflict where both sides are evenly matched and cannot gain progress over the other |
| reparations | payment for damages caused during a war |
| militarism | constantly building up your military in order to be prepared for war |
| Allied Powers | France, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States |
| assassination | the act of killing someone (especially a famous or important person) in a sudden or violent way |
| armistice | an agreement to stop fighting |
| alliance | an agreement between countries/nations to help and protect each other |
| neutral | not taking sides in a conflict |
| nationalism | showing extreme loyalty and patriotism toward your country |
| Central Powers | Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire |
| U-boat | a German submarine |
| propaganda | spreading ideas or information to either convince people to support a cause or to hurt an opposing cause |
| trench warfare | a type of combat where soldiers are fighting from trenches dug into the ground |
