Technology Advances in this, like ships, maps and compasses, helped Europeans feel less threatened by the unknown
East Indies Where Europeans purchased spices and perfume; they wanted to find a more direct route. Also called the "spice islands".
Leif Erikson Viking leader from Greenland who established a settlement in Canada (called Vinland)
Christopher Columbus Italian navigator who discovered the New World for Spain while looking for a route to Asia for jewels, spices and silk; he landed in the Bahamas first and after 4 trips he never found riches
Amerigo Vespucci Italian in the service of Portugal who traveled along the coast of South America and discovered the land was not part of Asia, but a "new" world; America was named after him
John Cabot Italian explorer who claimed Newfoundland, Canada for England while looking for the Northwest Passage (a waterway through North America to Asia)
Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese explorer who found a sea route to the Spice Islands by sailing around the American continent. His crew was the first to circumnavigate the world which proved the world was round and helped map it; he named the Pacific Ocean.
Hernando de Soto Spanish Conquistador who found gold in Peru and then explored the Southeast with six hundred men in search of more gold, which he never found
Henry Hudson English explorer who explored for the Dutch. He claimed the Hudson River around present day New York and called it New Netherland.
Robert La Salle Frenchman who followed the Mississippi River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, claiming the region for France and naming it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV
Juan Ponce de Leon Spanish Explorer who "discovered" and named Florida while searching for the "Fountain of Youth"
Columbian Exchange Trade of plants and animals between Europe and the Americas during the Age of Exploration
Items traded from the Old World (Europe) to the New World (Americas) Coffee, wheat, cows, pigs, horses, small pox
Items traded from the New World (Americas) to the Old World (Europe) Cacao, sweet potatoes, cotton, pumpkin, turkey, tobacco, maize
Caravel A three-masted ship used by the Portuguese and Spanish in the exploration of the Atlantic
St. Augustine, FL Oldest permanent European settlement in the US in 1565
Compass A magnetic instrument that shows direction by pointing North
Astrolabe An instrument used by sailors to determine their location by observing the position of the stars
Circumnavigate To sail around the world
Sponsorship Most explorers were sponsored by kings and queens. The countries included Spain, Portugal, England, France and the Netherlands.
Effect on Native Americans Explorers brought items to trade, but also brought diseases and turned many Native Americans into slaves.
