TermDefinition
Compromise of 1850 Bills that required an equal number of slave and free states.
Tariffs Cause of the war because taxes were placed on imports and the South (who needed more imports) refused to pay.
Slavery Cause of the war because the South needed slaves to run plantations but the North had factories and didn't need them.
Election of 1860 Cause of the war because Lincoln wanted to end slavery and the South didn't.
States' Rights Cause of the war because the South wanted each state to make its own decision about slavery.
Secession The southern states broke away from the Union and formed the Confederacy.
Underground Railroad A series of safe routes, houses and people that helped runaway slaves reach freedom.
Conductors Leaders who led slaves to safety.
Abolitionists People who believed that slavery should be against the law.
Reconstruction Rebuilding the US after the Civil War
Harriet Tubman Former slave who helped slaves escape on the Underground Railroad
Fort Sumter Beginning of the war when Confederates attacked the fort in South Carolina before the Union supplies arrived and the Union surrendered.
Battle of Bull Run First major battle of the Civil War; the Confederate Army were victorious with 20,000 fewer men.
Battle of Antietam Battle in Maryland that ended Lee's first invasion of the North; it was the most bloodshed in military history.
Emancipation Proclamation Document issued by Lincoln that declared that all slaves in Confederate-held territory were free.
Battle of Gettysburg Turning point of the War that made it clear the North would win. 50,000 people died, and the South lost its chance to invade the North.
Gettysburg Address A 3-minute speech by Abraham Lincoln after the Battle of Gettysburg at the dedication of a national cemetery.
Sherman's March to the Sea Union general Sherman's destructive march across Georgia, destroying warehouses and more.
Appomattox Court House Famous as the site of the surrender of the Confederate Army under Robert E. Lee to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant.
Ulysses S. Grant General of the Union Army and was responsible for winning the Civil War for the North
Robert E. Lee Commander of the Confederate Army
Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the United States saved the Union during the Civil War and emancipated the slaves; was assassinated by Booth (1809-1865)
Jefferson Davis First and only President of the Confederate States of America
Northern Advantages Larger population, most of the factories to make supplies, most of the railroads located here, strong Navy, more money, and they had an established government.
Southern Advantages Knowledge of the land, fighting to protect lifestyle, skilled soldiers, and better trained officers.
Union The troops fighting for the North, also called Yankees
Confederate The troops fighting for the South, also called Rebels
Fugitive Slave Act Designed to allow southern slaveholders to reclaim slaves who escaped to free states.
