Weather and Climate

TermDefinition
Water cycle The continuous movement of water on, above, and below the Earth’s surface through processes like evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.
Evaporation The process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas due to heat.
transpiration The release of water vapor from plants into the atmosphere.
Sublimation The process where a solid (like ice or snow) changes directly into a gas without becoming liquid.
Condensation The process by which water vapor in the air cools and changes back into liquid droplets.
Precipitation Water released from clouds in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Weather The day-to-day state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility.
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air.
Relative Humility The percentage of water vapor present in the air compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at that temperature.
Dew point The temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor and dew forms.
air pressure The weight of the air above a given point, usually measured in millibars or inches of mercury.
Wind The movement of air from areas of high pressure to low pressure.
Visibility The distance one can clearly see, usually affected by fog, rain, snow, or pollution.
Air mass A large body of air with uniform temperature and humidity characteristics.
front The boundary where two different air masses meet.
Jet stream Fast-flowing, narrow air currents in the upper atmosphere that influence weather patterns.
Thunderstorm A storm with lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and sometimes hail.
Lightning A sudden electrostatic discharge during a storm, producing a flash of light.
Thunder The sound caused by the rapid expansion of air heated by lightning.
Hurricane A powerful tropical storm with strong winds (≥74 mph) and heavy rain.
Storm surae A rise in sea level caused by a hurricane or storm, leading to coastal flooding.
Tornado A rapidly rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground.
Sinkhole A depression or hole in the ground caused by the collapse of a surface layer.
Wildfire An uncontrolled fire that spreads through vegetation.
Muckfire A slow, underground fire burning in peat or organic soil.
Climate The average weather conditions of a region over a long period of time.
Latitude The distance north or south of the equator, affecting climate and sunlight exposure.
Tropography The physical features of the Earth’s surface, like mountains, valleys, and plains.
Elevation The height above sea level, affecting temperature and weather.
Suface Currents Ocean currents that flow at or near the surface, driven by wind and affecting climate.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
