Judaism vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Polytheism belief in many gods
Monotheism belief in one god
Judaism First monotheistic religion to develop. Developed in the Middle East in a region known as the Fertile Crescent
Abraham The founder of Judaism
Covenant an agreement between God and Abraham
Famine Mass starvation because a lack of access to food
Moses a Hebrew (Jewish man) who was chosen by God to lead the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt
Prophet people who receive messages from God that they are supposed to share with others (Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammed are all considered prophets).
Ten Commandments the code of behavior for Judaism and Christianity. Rules that teach people how to be moral and ethical.
Sabbath The holy day for Jewish people is from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.
Messiah "savior; Jewish people believe that a savior will be sent to Earth by God but has not come yet. This is the major difference between Christians and Jewish people. Christians believe Jesus was the Messiah, Jewish people believe the Messiah hasn't come yet"
Torah The Jewish holy book
Diaspora forced migration of the Jewish people. This happens several times in the history of the Jewish faith.
Kosher diet "dietary restrictions based on faith, they do not mix dairy products with meat, they do not eat shellfish, etc"
Anti-Semitism mistreatment of the Jewish people because of their religion.
Sect/Denomination Different groups within the same religion. They practice the religion differently but believe in the same basic concepts.
