Latin American and Medieval Vocabulary

| Agriculture | The practice of growing crops and raising animals for food |
| Aztec | Ancient American civilization centered around present-day Mexico City, known for taking human sacrifice to an extreme. Conquered by the Spanish in 1521. |
| Circumnavigate | To travel completely around the Earth |
| Civilization | An organized society in which people work together for the greater good. |
| Columbian Exchange | The exchange of flora, fauna, ideas, disease, etc. between the New and Old worlds after the arrival of Columbus in America. |
| Conquistador | A Spanish conqueror |
| Cusco (Cuzco) | The Inca capital city. Located in present-day Peru. |
| Debt Peonage | Workers could not leave an Encomienda if a debt was owed to the Encomendero. This system made the natives little more than slaves. |
| Domesticate | To tame animals or cultivate plants for human use, such as farming, providing foods, or being pets. |
| Encomienda | Large land grants were provided by the Spanish king. All natives living on an Encomienda were required to work for the Encomendero. |
| Encomendero | The Spanish owner of an Encomienda. |
| Glyphs (Hieroglyphs) | A pictorial form of writing. |
| Hunter Gatherer | A person or group that lives by hunting animals and gathering wild plants for food, rather than farming. |
| Inca | Ancient American civilization located in the South American Andes from Ecuador to Chile, known for precision masonry skills. Conquered by the Spanish in the 1530s |
| Job Specialization | When people in a society focus on different kinds of work like farming, making tools, or building, instead of each individual doing all tasks themselves. |
| Maya | Ancient American civilization in present-day Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, northern Central America. Was known for developing writing and for its accurate calendar and astronomical observations. It declined before the arrival of the Spanish in America. |
| Polytheism | Belief in many gods. |
| Prehistoric | The time before written records were made. |
| Tenochtitlan | The Aztec capital city. Mexico City was built on its ruins. |
| Social Class | A person’s place or standing in society. |
| Social Pyramid | Because there were so few people at the top and so many people at the bottom of the Spanish colonial social class system, its structure is depicted by a pyramid. |
| Mestizo | A person of part Spanish and part native heritage in Spanish colonial America. |
| Mulatto | A person of part Spanish and African heritage in Spanish colonial America. |
| Criollo | A person of pure Spanish heritage but born in America. |
| Peninsular | A person born in Spain and sent to America (top of the social pyramid). |
| Black Death | A disease that struck Europe during the Middle Ages. AS much as half the population was killed. |
| City-States | An independent country the size of a city. |
| Clergy | The people who officiate a religion (priests, for example) |
| Crusades | A series of wars in the Middle Ages in which the Catholic Church attempted to retake control of the Holy Land (the area around Israel where Christ lived) |
| Feudal System | The economic system during the Middle Ages in which land is owned by the king but worked by vassals |
| Fief | An estate of land held in service to a Feudal lord. |
| Humanism | A system of thought where people are of prime importance rather than a deity (God). |
| Kingdom | A territory ruled by a monarch. |
| Knight | A soldier (mounted on horseback) who served a Feudal lord. |
| Lord | A man of high social rank in the Middle Ages who gave fiefs to vassals. |
| Manor | The residence of a Feudal lord. |
| Noble | A person of importance in a Feudal society. Their title is hereditary. |
| Peasant | A poor farmer. |
| Perspective | A point of view. |
| Renaissance | The revival of art and literature that signified the end of Medieval and the start of modern times. |
| Secular | Ideas, beliefs, and activities that have no religious basis. |
| Serf | A farm laborer who is required to work the land of their lord. |
| Tax | A required contribution to the government. |
| Vassal | A person under the protection of a Feudal lord. In return the Vassal promises loyalty and support. |
