Crusade One of a series of exoeditions Europeans made to regain control of Christian holy sites in the Middle East from the A.D. 1000s to the 1200s.
Classical (adj) Related to the culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
Reaissance (n) A reawakening of culture and intellectual curiosty in Europe from the 1300s to the 1600s
Technology (n) The use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes
Astrolabe (n) An instrument used to plan a course, using the stars
Compass (n) An instrument that shows the direction of mangnetic north
Pilgrimage (n) A journey to a holy place.
Mosque (n) A muslim house of worship.
Cape (n) A point of land that sticks out into water, much like a peninsula.
Circumnavigate (verb) To travel completely around something, usally by water.
Conquistador (n) Spanish explorer.
Immunity (n) Resistance, such as to disease.
Pueblo (n) A town in the Spanish-ruled lands.
Mission (n) A religious community where farming was carried out and Native Americans were converted to Christianity
Devote (verb) To commit oneself or one's resources to something.
Alter (verb) To change.
Contact (n) When two or more groups or objects come together.
Presidio (n) A fort.
Plantation (n) A large farm.
Found (verb) To start, to establish.
Acquire (verb) To get possession or control of.
Reformation (noun) A sixteen century religous movemoent rejecting or changing some Rome Catholic teachings and practices and estaablishing prostestant Churches.
Armada (noun) A fleet of warships.
Protestantism (noun) A form of Christianity that was in opposition to the Catholic Church.
Northwest Passage (noun) A sea passage between the Alantic and the Pacific Oceans along the north coast of North America.
Widespread (adj) Over a wide area.
Tenant farmer (noun) Settler who pays rent of provides work to a landowner in exchange for the right to use the landowner's land.
Pose (verb) To present; to offer.
