Independence Vocab

TermDefinition
Bicameral Bicameral means having two parts or houses in a lawmaking group.
Republic Republic means a country where people choose their leaders to make decisions for them.
Ordinance Ordinance means a law or rule made by a government or authority.
Depreciate Depreciate means to lose value over time.
Depression A depression is a long time when the economy is very poor and many people lose jobs.
Manumission Manumission is the act of a slave owner freeing their slaves.
Proportional Proportional means something that is in the right size or amount compared to something else.
Compromise Compromise means everyone gives up a little to agree on something.
Federalism Sharing power between the federal and state governments.
Legislative Branch The legislative branch is the part of government that makes laws.
Executive Branch The executive branch is the part of government that carries out and enforces laws.
Electoral College The electoral college is a group of people chosen to vote for the president and vice president of the United States.
Judicial Branch The judicial branch is the part of government that explains laws and makes sure they are fair.
Check and balances Checks and balances means each part of government can stop the others from having too much power.
Amendment An amendment is a change or addition to a law or the Constitution.
