| Bicameral | Having two separate lawmaking chambers. |
| Republic | A government where a representative is elected by the citizens instead of having a monarch. |
| Ordinance | A law that is passed by legislation. |
| Depreciate | To diminish in value. |
| Depression | A period of time when economic activity slows-resulting in an increase in unemployment. |
| Manumission | The freeing of enslaved people/persons. |
| Proportion | Having the same size relation in objects or items. |
| Compromise | An agreement of settling a dispute by each party giving up some demands. |
| Federalism | Sharing power between the federal (overall) and state government. |
| Legislative branch | The lawmaking branch of a government. |
| Executive branch | The branch of government that executes or carries out laws from the legislative branch. (Headed by the President.) |
| Electoral college | A special group of electors chosen to vote for President and Vice President. |
| Judicial branch | The branch of government that involves courts that settle disputes and questions of law. |
| Checks and Balances | A system where each branch of government limits the power of their fellow branches. |
| Amendment | A change or correction or improvement added to a document. |
