Spirit of Independence Vocab Cards

TermDefinition
Bicameral The government or legislative body being separated into two branches.
Republic Where the people have the power and elect a person to represent them.
Ordinance Where the government makes a law for all of the people over their authority.
Depreciate When something lessens in value over time.
Depression It means a big decline in the economic status of a place that was prolonged.
Manumission When you are released from being a slave.
Proportional When the amount of seats in a legislature is equal or close to equal to the amount of share of the total votes it received.
Compromise When two parties reach a meeting point giving up something to get one big thing that they want more.
Federalism A type of government when there is one big nation government then multiple smaller states or regional governments.
Legislative Branch A part of the US government makes laws and is the voice of the people.
Executive Branch A part of the US government that is responsible for enforcing laws that were made and administering the laws.
Electoral College A body of people from the US who formally cast votes to elect the president and vice president.
Judicial Branch A branch in the US that is the courts of the government they interpret the laws and will applies them to each case individually.
Checks and Balances Making sure that one organization does not give individuals or groups too much power.
Amendment When a change or addition is added to a piece of legislation paper.
