Independence Vocab

TermDefinition
Bicameral A legislative body having two branches or chambers.
Republic A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
Ordinance A process of creating laws by a municipal authority.
Depreciate Something decreasing in value over time.
Depression An economic downturn in society.
Manumission release from slavery.
Proportional Similar size or amount to something else.
Compromise An agreement reached where both parties give up something they want to resolve a dispute.
Federalism a system of government that divides power between a national (federal) government and smaller state or regional governments
Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes the laws.
Executive Branch the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch.
Electoral College A body of people representing the body of the United States.
Judicial Branch The branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional.
Check and Balances Counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups.
Amendment A formal change to a legal document.
