| Bicameral | A legislative body having two branches or chambers. |
| Republic | A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. |
| Ordinance | A process of creating laws by a municipal authority. |
| Depreciate | Something decreasing in value over time. |
| Depression | An economic downturn in society. |
| Manumission | release from slavery. |
| Proportional | Similar size or amount to something else. |
| Compromise | An agreement reached where both parties give up something they want to resolve a dispute. |
| Federalism | a system of government that divides power between a national (federal) government and smaller state or regional governments |
| Legislative Branch | The branch of government that makes the laws. |
| Executive Branch | the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch. |
| Electoral College | A body of people representing the body of the United States. |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional. |
| Check and Balances | Counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. |
