| Bicameral | A legislative body that has two separate chambers or houses. |
| Republic | A form of government where the people and their elected representatives have power |
| Ordinance | A law made by a local government authority |
| Depreciate | Decrease in value over time |
| Depression | When the economy has a downturn |
| Manumission | The formal act of freeing a slave by their owner |
| Proportional | Something that is fair |
| Compromise | When two or more people or groups agree to solve a problem by each giving up something so that everyone gets part of what they want. |
| Federalism | The government is split between two levels, the national government(for the whole country) and the state governments (for each state). |
| Legislative Branch | One of the houses of government that makes laws also known as Congress. |
| Executive Branch | One of the houses of government that carries out and enforces the laws. |
| Electoral College | The system the United States uses to choose the President and Vice President. |
| Judicial Branch | One of the houses of government that interprets the law and decides if they follow the constitution. |
| Checks and Balances | A system that makes sure no one branch of government becomes too powerful. |
| Amendment | A change or addition made to a law or document, like the U.S. Constitution. |
