| Depression | A severe and prolonged decline in economical activity |
| Manumission | A release from slavery |
| Proportional | Having a constant ratio or equivalent size between two things |
| Compromise | An agreement reached by mutual concessions |
| Federalism | A system of government where power is divided and shared between a national government and a smaller state government |
| Legislative Branch | Congress, a bicameral legislature composed of the House and the Senate |
| Executive Branch | Responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress. It is led by the President and includes the Vice President, the President's Cabinet, and all federal departments and agencies |
| Electoral College | In the United States, the Electoral College is the group of presidential electors that is formed every four years for the sole purpose of voting |
| Judicial Branch | The judicial branch is one of the three branches of government responsible for interpreting laws, applying them to individual cases, and deciding if laws violate the Constitution |
