TermDefinition
Bicameral having two branches or chambers
Republic A form of government where power is held by the public and exercised through elected representatives, rather than a monarch
Ordinance A piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority
Depreciate Decline in value over time
Depression A severe and prolonged decline in economical activity
Manumission A release from slavery
Proportional Having a constant ratio or equivalent size between two things
Compromise An agreement reached by mutual concessions
Federalism A system of government where power is divided and shared between a national government and a smaller state government
Legislative Branch Congress, a bicameral legislature composed of the House and the Senate
Executive Branch Responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress. It is led by the President and includes the Vice President, the President's Cabinet, and all federal departments and agencies
Electoral College In the United States, the Electoral College is the group of presidential electors that is formed every four years for the sole purpose of voting
Judicial Branch The judicial branch is one of the three branches of government responsible for interpreting laws, applying them to individual cases, and deciding if laws violate the Constitution
Check and Balances a system of government where each branch has specific powers to limit or influence the actions of the others, preventing any single branch from becoming too powerful
Amendment a formal change, addition, or revision to a legal document, such as a law, contract, or constitution, to update or improve it without a complete rewrite
